10ml of Tarragon Oyster liquid culture, complete with a 16g prick & IPA wipe.

This Oyster was kindly sent to us by Louis at Spore Supplies, a happy accident which has produced one of our favourite native Oysters. We’ve send this culture to numerous growers around the country and everybody loves it as mush as we do..Not only does it look stunning, it also smells and tastes incredible!

Don’t forget to add a bag of Sterile Grain to get your grow underway!

Our gourmet cultures are the perfect choice, to expand your own liquid mycelium or produce your own mushroom grain spawn, fruiting blocks and to ultimately, grow your own gourmet mushrooms! The 10ml syringe contains a premium culture, nurtured by us at Jurassic Coast Mushrooms, suspended in a broth rich in nutrients, to jump-start the growth of your mushrooms.

What you'll receive -

  • 1 x 10ml liquid culture syringe
  • 1 x IPA wipe
  • 1 x 16g sterile prick

By choosing a native liquid culture, you're not only going to be rewarded with yummy mushrooms but you will also be playing your role in preserving and supporting native fungi.

Our Pleurotus liquid cultures are produced in-house under sterile laboratory conditions and selected for fast colonisation, vigorous growth and reliable fruiting performance. Commonly known as Oyster mushrooms, Pleurotus species are among the most versatile and widely cultivated gourmet fungi in the world, valued for their rapid growth, adaptability and impressive range of colours, textures and flavours.

This collection includes a diverse range of species and strains, including native UK varieties alongside popular gourmet cultivars such as Pink, Blue, Grey, Pale, Tarragon and King Oyster mushrooms. Each liquid culture contains actively growing live mycelium suspended within a nutrient-rich solution, allowing for efficient inoculation of sterile grain, agar or liquid media.

Pleurotus species are especially well suited to both beginner and experienced cultivators due to their aggressive mycelial growth and ability to thrive across a broad range of substrates. Most strains perform exceptionally well on hardwood sawdust, straw, supplemented pellets, paper-based substrates and agricultural by-products.

Colonisation & Incubation

For best results, inoculate sterilised grain using sterile technique in a clean working environment. Oyster mushroom mycelium is typically fast growing and highly resilient compared with many other gourmet species.

Ideal incubation temperatures generally range between:

  • 20–26°C

Typical grain colonisation times:

  • 7–14 days depending on species, temperature and inoculation rate

Once fully colonised, grain spawn can be transferred to bulk substrate for secondary colonisation and fruiting. Most Pleurotus species colonise bulk substrates rapidly, often within:

  • 10–21 days

Different species within the Pleurotus genus may display unique growth characteristics. Some strains develop dense, cotton-like mycelium while others form rhizomorphic growth with strong linear branching. Colour intensity, fruiting shape and growth speed can also vary significantly between isolates.

Fruiting Conditions

Pleurotus species generally prefer:

  • High humidity (85–95% RH)
  • Consistent fresh air exchange
  • Moderate indirect light
  • Stable fruiting temperatures

Fruiting temperature preferences vary considerably depending on species:

  • Pink Oyster varieties often prefer warmer conditions around 20–30°C
  • Blue and Grey Oyster strains typically favour cooler fruiting temperatures between 10–20°C
  • King Oyster species often perform best around 15–21°C

Proper fresh air exchange is particularly important during fruiting, as elevated CO₂ levels can lead to elongated stems and reduced cap development. Maintaining balanced airflow and humidity will encourage healthy cluster formation and well-developed fruiting bodies.

Many Oyster species fruit aggressively once environmental conditions are suitable and can produce multiple flushes from a well-colonised substrate block.

Handling & Storage

Shake thoroughly before use to evenly distribute the live mycelium throughout the culture solution. Always use sterile needles and clean inoculation practices to minimise contamination risk.

For short-term storage:

  • Refrigerate between 2–8°C
  • Do not freeze
  • Allow the syringe to reach room temperature before inoculation

For best viability and performance, liquid cultures are ideally used within several months of receipt.

For Research & Cultivation

Our Pleurotus liquid cultures are intended for mycological research, microscopy and cultivation purposes. Due to the wide diversity found within the Pleurotus genus, individual species and strains may vary in growth rate, morphology, fruiting behaviour and substrate preference.

Whether you are expanding your culture collection, producing grain spawn or exploring gourmet mushroom cultivation at home or commercial scale, Pleurotus species remain some of the most rewarding and productive fungi available to cultivators.
